From Rachel Izes:

Notes from the Board - January 2019

Happy New Year! The Board of Trustees would like to thank all the congregants who have contributed funds for our recent safety upgrades. In mid-December the front door was fitted with new locks, hinges, and peephole along with other structural enhancements. A “smart” doorbell was also installed. Members of our Buildings & Grounds and Security committees are working closely with the Somers Police, the Westchester County Police, and the Westchester Jewish Council to maintain the level of security and comfort that allows us to meet, worship, learn, and socialize together in peace. Speaking of comfort in the building, the Board is also looking into obtaining thermostats for the social hall and sanctuary that can connect to HCS WIFI and be monitored and operated remotely. We hope this will keep us warm throughout the winter while reducing fuel, oil, and electricity consumption.

Thank you to the Sisterhood for organizing last month’s very spirited Chanukah Dinner - fun was had by all. Next up for Sisterhood is January 26’s beer tasting event hosted by HCS’s very own Alan Most. Please see the flyer for more details. Save the date for Sisterhood’s “Ladies’ Night Out” slated for February 7 (Snow Date 2/21). And on the horizon is a school/congregational trip to the Lower East Side’s Tenement Museum. Details to follow.

HSC Hebrew school was recently gifted six new Amazon Fire tablets outfitted with special software to supplement our Hebrew Language curriculum. Teachers and students alike are pleased with how fun and effective they are - especially considering HCS’s multi level classroom model.

Lastly, we are pleased to announce that we are in the final stages of the hiring process with Rabbi Shoshana Leis. We are hopeful that she will begin her tenure with us this coming July!

B’shalom,

Your HCS Board of Trustees
