Our Cantor

Ruth Ossher has studied Judaism throughout her life with several rabbis and cantors.  She is particularly indebted to Cantor Jeffrey Shiovitz for teaching her to conduct services and to Rabbi Carla Freedman for many years of Hebrew and Torah study.  Ruth graduated from the University of Toronto with a Masters in Social Work, majoring in Research Methodology and Program Evaluation.  For more than 25 years, she has worked as a Jewish educator and is a proud recipient of the Grinspoon-Steinhardt Award for Excellence in Jewish Education. Ruth was Education Director of the Jewish Family Congregation of South Salem for several years, during which she revamped the Hebrew curriculum. She currently teaches Grades 3, 6 and 7 at Shir Shalom and is one of their Bar/Bat Mitzvah tutors.

Ruth is married to Harold Ossher and has two grown children.  She is an avid knitter, cook, baker, hiker and reader.
